The New START arms control treaty is ending. Is a new nuclear arms race about to begin?

The last remaining agreement between the US and Russia to control the disarmament of both countries' nuclear arsenals has expired. The New START Treaty was signed in 2010 by then US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev. In 2021, it was extended for five years. What are the consequences of this contractual vacuum between the two largest nuclear powers? What role does China play in this?
