Security Imaginaries of Climate Movements

What visual means do activists in large, global climate protection movements such as Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion use to make climate change comprehensible as a threat to human, national or global security? And how do visual representations of climate futures influence the self-image, goals and motives of climate movements? Dr David Shim from the University of Groningen and Dr Delf Rothe (IFSH) are exploring these key questions in their joint research project ‘Security Imaginaries of Climate Movements’. The project will contribute to the academic debate on visual narratives in global politics, the (self-)legitimisation of social movements as global political actors, and visual methods in international relations research. The research results will be presented in the form of a scientific report and are also expected to be shown in civil society exhibitions in Hamburg and Groningen at the end of the year.

The project will run for twelve months. It is funded by start-up financing from the Universities of Hamburg and Groningen.

SECIMA is part of the horizontal research focus ‘doing peace!’ at the IFSH.
